Sporadica: Bored at Work

Written by on February 25, 2019

Once again, took time off.  Good thing I named this column ‘Sporadica’ since I’m about as regular as a trucker full of cheese.  Stew on that for a moment.  It’s one of my better metaphors.

This time out I decided to talk about myself.  My column, my narcissism.  A long time ago I worked for a company that sold animation art.  The pay was crap, but I loved the customers.  Toward the end of my tenure, the owner of the gallery sent me to a sales training course.  If you’ve never been, don’t go, they suck.  Two minutes of useful information, 58 minutes of fluff.  Utter garbage.  Anyway, I happen to be an incessant doodler.  Can’t help it, that’s how my mind works.  If nothing’s going on and I can’t walk away…I draw.  When I went to the training class, I took a sketchbook to keep my mind occupied.  Owner didn’t like that and told me I was being insubordinate. I disagreed and might have said I didn’t need a lecture on how to take notes. Yadda, yadda, yadda, and I was fired from a cartoon company for doodling.

If there was a lesson to be learned I missed it.  I still doodle like a madman.

And every now and then I do something with them, like posting them here.

These all started off as ‘marginal sketches’ because I did them in the margins of meeting notes.  The inspiration was a sign near my office featuring a cow, a pig and a bull.  I couldn’t figure out the cow so I drew a chicken instead.  Not sure where the bunny came from, but I think I might have some resentment and anger issues.

When all is said and done I plan on drawing the entire Chinese Zodiac. It’s the logical progression of bull, chicken, pig, rabbit…rat, snake, panda, geisha, dragon, stick, fortune cookie, monkey?  I don’t know, I need to do some research.

In the meantime, enjoy this little feature I call ‘Bored at Work’.
